It is often said that politeness costs nothing. In fact, it seems that a little more courtesy could save businesses 5billion every year.
Frequently hearing the phrase "thank you" or "well done" means the same to staff as a modest pay rise, researchers say. Praise and encouragement also makes employees more likely to work hard and stay in their jobs, saving on the cost of finding replacements.
A third of 1,000 workers surveyed by consulting firm White Water Strategies said they did not get thanked at all when they did well, and a further third said they were not thanked enough. In both cases, staff said they felt undervalued, meaning they were less likely to exert themselves and were more likely to look for employment elsewhere. The net result is around 5.2billion in lost productivity from employees who would raise their game if they felt more appreciated, White Water claimed. According to the company, praising staff has the same motivational kick as a 1 per cent pay rise - and works out much cheaper for bosses. Three out of four employees said that regular acknowledgement by their bosses was important to them, but only a quarter said they were actually given as much praise as they felt they needed. The survey found that those in blue-collar and manual jobs were less likely to be given any recognition for doing well. ks5u
In regional terms, Scottish staff felt most undervalued. Four out of ten workers said they were never thanked and eight out of ten said they would like more praise. However, workers in the North-East are less impressed by being buttered up by the boss, as only 69 per cent said they felt the need to be told "well done" regularly.
Older employees and women need the most reassurance, according to psychologist Averil Leimon, a director of White Water Strategies. She said that words of praise did more than create a pleasant place to work - they could even boost profits.
    41. What can we infer from the text?
    A. Three out of four employees said they were given as much praise as they felt they needed.

    C. White-collar were more likely to be praised than manual jobs.

    A. more eager for boss’ praise B. less likely to be moved by boss’ praise
    C. less eager for boss’ praise D. more likely to be moved by boss’ praise
    43. According to psychologist Averil Leimon, what kind of person need the most praise?
    A. Older male employees. B. Older female employees.

    44. What does “Politeness costs nothing.” mean?

New rules and behavior standards for middle school students came out in March. Middle school is going to use a new way to decide who the top students are. The best students won't only have high marks. They will also be kids who don't dye (color) their hair, smoke or drink. The following are some of the new rules.
Tell the truth. Have you ever copied someone else's work on an exam? Don't do it again! That's not something an honest student should do. If you have played computer games for two hours in your room, don't tell your parents you have done homework.
Do more at school. Good students love animals and care for other people. April is Bird-Loving Month in China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate? You should join! That way, you can learn more about animals and how to protect them. When more people work together, it makes more fun for everyone.
Have you ever quarreled with your teammates when your basketball team lost? Only working together can make your team stronger. Be friendly to the people you are with. Try to think of others not only yourself.
Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe you'll discover Earth II someday. Don't look down on new ideas. Everyone's ideas are important. You should welcome them, because new ideas make life better for everyone.
Protect yourself. Has someone ever taken money from one of your classmates? Don't let it happen to you. If you have to go home late, you should let your parents know.
Use the Internet carefully. The Internet can be very useful for your studies. But some things on the Internet aren't for kids, so try to look at Web pages that are good for you. You can use the Web for fun or homework. Can't you find any good Web sites for children? Here are some:
    45. The school new rules will help kids by telling them ____________.
    A. how they can study wellB. what they should do at school
    C. what is right and what is wrongD. how they can protect themselves
    46. The main idea for the fourth paragraph is about _____________.

    C. being a good friend to othersD. getting on well with others
    47. The passage tells us how to ____________.
    A. be top studentsB. do more at school

Proverbs are quite common in spoken English. We don’t normally put them in a composition or a letter. Sometimes it is helpful if you know what common proverbs mean. Here are a few examples.
1)“Once bitten, twice shy.” If a dog bites me, I shall be twice as careful in future when I see it. This proverb is also used to apply to many things and not only to dogs. If you have been cheated at a shop, you will not go the same shop again.
    2) “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” If I am a hunter, trying to catch birds, it is better to catch one than to see two birds in a bush but not able to catch them. Thus this means that what you have already got is better than the chance of being able to get something bigger in future.
    3) “Too many cooks spoil the broth (soup)”. When too many people do something, they get in each other’s way and do a bad job. ks5u
    4) “To pour oil on troubled waters” is to try to calm things down. Oil is lighter than water. If a ship is in trouble at sea, another ship may come to help it. The second ship can send small boats to rescue people. However, it may first pour oil on the sea to make the sea less rough.
    5) “Don’t be a dog in a manger( 槽 )”means“ Don’t be selfish.” In a stable ( 馬房 ), the manger is the place where the horse’s food is put. Sometimes a dog will sleep in the manger and bark when a horse comes to get its food. The dog does want to eat the lay in the manger but it will not let the horse eat it.
    6) “He is sitting on the fence” means that somebody will not say whether he is in favor of a plan or against it. He is sitting on a fence between two opposing sides, perhaps waiting to see which side will win.
7)“He who pays the piper calls the tune.” A piper is a musician. The man who employs or pays a musician can say what tunes the man will play. Thus this means that if a man provides the money for a plan, he can say how it will be carried out.
8)“You can’t get blood out of a stone” means that you cannot get something from a person who has not got any of the things you want. e. g. you cannot get a million dollars from a poor man.
    48. Peter has a bicycle which is much too small for him but he does not want to let his younger brother ride on it. His mother is angry and says to him: ______.
    A. You can’t get blood out of a stone B. Don’t be a dog in a manger
    C. The early bird gets the worm D. To pour oil on troubled waters
    49. Mr. Wang paid for a new school. Some people didn’t like the design of the school but they didn’t argue with Mr. Wang because ______.
    A. he was sitting on the fence B. once bitten, twice shy
    C. he who pays the piper calls the tune D. a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush
    50. Mrs. Lin wanted to buy a new dress. Her husband suggested that she buy it from a shop near their home. Mrs. Lin disagreed because she had been cheated by that shop. So she said :“I won’t go there again because ______.”
    A. a bird in the hand is worth two in the bushB. I am sitting on the fence
    C. once bitten, twice shyD. too many cooks spoil the broth
    51. Mr. Brown had quite a good job in Hong Kong but he thought that if he went to Singapore, he might get a much better job with more money and a larger house. His wife didn’t want him to leave his job in Hong Kong and she reminded him that ______.
    A. a bird in the hand is worth two in the bushB. too many cooks spoil the broth
    C. you can not get blood out of a stone
    D
We always convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, than another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are. After that we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. we will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage.
We always tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse(配偶) gets his or her act together, when we get a nice car, and are able to go on a nice vocation and when we retire. The truth is, there's no better time than right now. If not now, when? our life will always be filled with challenges. It's best to admit this to ourselves and decide to be happy anyway.
One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred Souza. He said." for a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin-----real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid.
Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life." This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment that you have. ks5u
And remember that time waits for no one. So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school; until you get married, until you get divorced; until you have kids; until you retire; until you get a new car or home; until spring; until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy...
Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So, work like you don't need money, love like you've never been hurt, And dance like no one's watching.
52.Which is the best title for the passage?
    A. Life Will be Better
    B. Be Brave to Face the Challenges in Our Life
    C. Happiness is A Journey
    D. Don’t Wait
53.Why do we always convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, than another?
A.Because happy life is always in the future.
B.Because we don’t realize treasuring every moment means happiness.
C.Because no one will be happy until he gets married.
D.Because only if we get to a destination, we can lead a happy life.
    54. By reading Alfred Souza’s words, we know _______ .
    A. his life was always filled with too many obstacles for him to face
    B. he had to face more obstacles than anyone else
    C. the obstacles in life helped him to see what happiness is
    D. he realized that there is no way to happiness
    55. What does the writer want to tell us?
    A. Time and tide waits for no man, so treasure every moment.
    B. Will is power,so do what you want to do.
    C. A thousand words will not leave so deep an impression as one deed, so do not talk, just do it.
    D. So said, so done, so do what you said.

    Madam Mary,
My name is Li Hua. I’m a high school student in Guangzhou and I like English very much. I have a question about the differences between American English and British English and I hope you can help me.
I have been learning English for many years.(Our schoolbooks and tapes all use British English. But when I listen to the radio or talk with foreigners, I often hear and speak American English.) Now ,when I speak English, some of my classmates say I speak British English. In fact, I don’t know what kind of English I speak. I really want to know the differences between British English and American English. I wonder what are the differences between the two. Is it a problem if I sometimes use American English and sometimes British English?
Thank you very much. Hope to hear from you soon.
    Yours sincerely,
